Our Spring Baby Petting Zoo Has Arrived!

We are so excited! Our farm is absolutely hopping! All the spring animals are being born on our ten-acre farm in the southwest valley. This year we have lambs, goats, bunnies, ducks, and chicks. And they are all super cute!

Welcome to the World

A Child’s Joy Spring Baby Petting ZooWhile our regular petting zoo is available year round, these baby animals will not be babies for very long. They are only available between February and April!

We have been breeding and raising hand-tamed, farm animals specifically for our petting zoos since 1990. It’s amazing how time flies! One of the things that really sets us apart is the fact that we raise our own animals and own our own equipment! We really are a one stop shop for all things awesome!

Our animals have been bred for generations from our very best animals. They’re introduced into our petting zoo as babies and as soon as they are old enough to travel, they join us on the road for our spring baby petting zoo. Since they acclimate to children from such an early age, they’re docile and very gentle. We promise!

They can be hand-fed, brushed, held, hugged, and loved! And they love every minute of it! It is such fun, every spring to introduce these sweet little animals to all of you! Don’t forget to bring your camera. You will want lots of pictures with your kids and these little ducks, chicks, goats, bunnies, and lambs!

Oh the Places We’ll Go!

Join the Animal Awareness Program!

It’s spring time and our baby animals are ready to come out and play!

A Child’s Joy Animal Awareness Program LambLambs, chicks, bunnies, goats… Our animals meet all sorts of groups: schools, pre-schools, church groups, day cares, boy/girl scouts, libraries, and park programs, as a part of our Animal Awareness Program.

Join in the Fun

This Animal Awareness Program is available on weekdays for either a morning or afternoon session. We gear this series to Pre-K through Fourth Grade. We are flexible, gearing the lesson towards larger or smaller groups depending on your needs. We can do basic, intermediate, as well as more in-depth sessions.

Just so you know, our Kinder session features animals, rhymes, and poems. All our programs include educational collateral materials for you and your class to keep. We’ve got you covered! Make a reservation and we take care of the rest!

Our hands-on lesson includes over a dozen types of species and breeds. The lessons have been created by teachers and include demonstrations, questions, and answers, plus supervised hands-on time with the animals.

There are several baby animal tours to choose from and each of our babies have been hand raised, on a real farm. Hand raising our babies give us the upper advantage, because they are familiar with human contact and love the attention!

YA Child’s Joy Animal Awareness Program Chicksou are welcome to add larger animals, like a calf or pony, to an outdoor venue, for petting or pictures, too! The best part is all the wonderful pictures you, as the parent, are able to snap!

We Bring the Fun to You!

Be sure to reserve your Animal Awareness Program, today! These sweet animals won’t be babies forever! Early March and April are the best months to see them in all their fuzzy, sweet cuteness!

To check availability and/or make a reservation, please visit our website! The chicks and bunnies are waiting for your call! Don’t worry, we don’t actually make them answer the phone! Their main job is to look adorable. They are so good at it!

Our Very Own Circus

Today, we want to spotlight one of our favorite families in Arizona. It just so happens that November is National Adoption Month, so we took a moment to ask Kate Hursh about her growing, busy family! Enjoy!

Your family is so unique! How long have you been fostering and adopting?

We have been foster and adoptive parents since April of 2006. We have cared for 25 children as of now and have joyfully reunified 15 precious ones to their families.  On October 2nd, we finalized our 6th adoption. Currently, our children are ages 9, 8, 7, 7, 6, 5, 5, 3, 2 and 1. There are two girls and eight boys.

What initially drew you to fostering and adopting? And why do you keep doing it?

George and I knew we wanted to adopt even before we were married and attempted to begin our family. My grandfather was adopted and my parents fostered newborns before I was born.

In April of 2006, we were chosen by two amazingly selfless birth parents to become a forever family for their soon-to-be-born baby girl. The week before, we had just been told that we would not be able to conceive a child naturally. On Easter Sunday of 2006, we met our daughter and became parents for the first time.

A couple of years later, we knew we wanted to grow our family and we heard about the tremendous need for foster parents. Our hearts and home were open to whomever God wanted to bring to our family. Now, years later, many children have come in and out of our home but have never left our hearts.

We love these children forever, no matter how long they stay with us. Currently in Arizona, there is a record number of children in foster care.

The need for foster families is at an all time high! Shelters and group homes are overflowing and children are sleeping in offices at the Division of Child Safety. We cannot ignore this crisis, and so, we continue to open our hearts and home to care for the children who need us.

Tell us How You Met the Jim and Laurie and A Child’s Joy?

It’s kind of a funny story… Two of our boys share a birthday and we wanted to rent a water slide for their party. It was a last minute decision so we jumped on google and the Prendergasts were the first to return our call and give us an estimate. Not wanting to waste any time, we quickly reserved the slip and slide and went on planning the party.

On the day of the party, my mom, who worked for many years with a local daycare provider, asked who the company was. When I told her that it was A Child’s Joy, she explained that as a child, I too attended many events with fun supplied by Jim and Laurie! My childhood memory had now come full circle and my children were experiencing the same fun that I did from the same amazing people many years before. 🙂

What was your favorite event that they did for you?

Although we LOVED the slip-and-slide that we rented for our boys’ party, it was so special for Jim to offer to come and celebrate one of our precious munchkin’s upcoming adoption. Seeing her face when a huge pink castle was being inflated in her honor, was absolutely priceless. The children had so much fun at both events that we swore it would become a regular thing for our “circus.”

Any words of wisdom for parents who want to make the holidays memorable?A Child’s Joy Hursh Christmas

Last year when we were setting up our Christmas tree, our now-adopted daughter (age 7) got a little twinkle in her eye and said softly, “I never decorated a tree before…”
It brought us to tears and made us realize how significant making the holidays special was for these children. We don’t ever want to take anything for granted… even something so small as unwrapping the ornaments from the box in the garage was an incredibly special time for her.

We plan to make sure — for years to come — that decorating the tree with all of the children in our home is a momentous occasion. Spending time with one another is important all the time, but especially around the holidays when memories of years past may not be so positive.

Here’s to building amazing, dreamworthy memories for all families this year.

What a special story. It is always an honor to celebrate with our families!
